The role


At Alto, we are actively participating in transforming the Canada of tomorrow through our high-speed rail project connecting Quebec City to Toronto. With the support of the Government of Canada, this innovative initiative aims to improve the quality of life of our citizens, strengthen ties between communities, and stimulate economic growth.


Of the seven priorities identified for the project, three are directly related to sustainability:
• Significantly increase the availability of accessible and affordable services;
• Contribute to the Government of Canada's commitment to carbon neutrality;
• Contribute positively to the Government of Canada's commitment to reconciliation with Indigenous peoples.


This role will report to the Director, Sustainability and will support the Alto and Cadence project teams, the selected private development partner (PDP), in integrating sustainable development and social responsibility issues (environment, climate, social, governance) throughout the design, construction, commissioning, and operation cycle of the future high-speed rail infrastructure connecting Quebec City to Toronto.

 

The responsibilities 


•    Contribute to defining and monitoring the sustainable development strategy (corporate and project);
•    Ensure compliance with environmental, social, and governance (ESG) regulations, as well as relevant certifications or standards (e.g., LEED, Envision, ISO 14001, ISO 26000, GHG protocol, GRI);
•    Ensure consistency with Canada's climate commitments and federal public policies related to sustainability (Federal Sustainable Development Act, Impact Assessment Act, Green Government Strategy, Canada's Carbon Neutrality Accountability Act);
•    Collaborate with various departments at Alto and Cadence to integrate sustainability into all aspects of the project;
•    Develop sustainability dashboards and indicators that reflect the importance of material issues for Alto;
•    Contribute to sustainability reports, audits, and external monitoring;
•    Communicate best practices in sustainability and raise awareness among project teams;
•    Actively monitor industry trends and best practices in sustainability.

 

Skills 


•    Practical knowledge of sustainability standards, frameworks, and regulations (e.g., LEED, Envision, ISO 14001, ISO 26000, TCFD, IFRS S1&S2, GHG protocol, GRI);
•    Ability to analyze studies and interpret technical data;
•    Proficiency in performance monitoring tools (ESG indicators, non-financial reporting, GRI, etc.);
•    Ability to consult and communicate with a variety of stakeholders;
•    Good writing skills (reports, strategic recommendations).

 

The requirements


•    Bachelor's degree in environmental studies, sustainable civil engineering, sustainable development, engineering, or social sciences applied to infrastructure required;
•    Master's degree or equivalent in environmental studies, sustainable civil engineering, sustainable development, engineering, or social sciences applied to infrastructure an asset;
•    Certification in sustainability an asset (e.g., ENV SP, LEED);
•    3 to 5 years (or more) of experience in consulting, project management, or sustainable development, ideally in the transportation infrastructure sector;
•    Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams, decision-makers, and various external stakeholders;
•    Analytical skills, autonomy, and diplomacy;
•    Bilingualism (FR/EN) required.
