The role
Reporting to the Rail Systems & Rolling Stock Director, the Senior Track Advisor will provide subject‑matter expertise to ensure that track design, construction, and maintenance strategies meet the safety, reliability, availability, and ride quality requirements associated with dedicated high‑speed passenger rail operations.
The role interfaces closely with Civil Works, Structures, Signaling, Rolling Stock, Systems Assurance, Constructability, and Maintenance teams across the consortium led by Alto, to deliver a world‑class rail infrastructure system.
The responsibilities
- Collaborate with the Private Development Partner to develop comprehensive plans for track requirements that align with project timelines and objectives.
- Act as a subject matter expert, providing technical guidance and oversight on the track design, including alignment and track geometry, ballasted and/or slab track systems and rails, sleepers, fastenings, ballast, and subgrade.
- Ensure compliance with Canadian regulatory requirements, project technical standards, and applicable international high‑speed rail standards (e.g., UIC, AREMA, Company‑specific rules).
- Provide technical input to the definition and management of track performance requirements, including safety, ride comfort, noise and vibration, durability, and maintainability, ensuring all environmental considerations (noise, vibrations, etc.) are taken into account under the specific Canadian environment.
- Support technical risk identification and mitigation related to track design and high‑speed operations, contributing to project risk registers and stage‑gate reviews.
- Support the alignment team in identifying, assessing, and defining all technical and physical constraints associated with the selected corridor.
- Manage technical interfaces between the track system and civil infrastructure (earthworks, drainage, bridges, tunnels, viaducts), signaling and train control systems, rolling stock dynamic and interface requirements and power supply, earthing, and stray current systems.
- Review and validate construction methodologies, constructability, and sequencing of track works proposed by the Partner.
- Provide technical support during track installation, alignment, and adjustment activities.
- Support the Testing & Commissioning strategy for track infrastructure.
- Support resolution of technical issues, non‑conformities, and design changes during delivery and commissioning phases.
The requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering or a related engineering discipline.
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Canada or eligibility for registration.
- At least 8 years of proven experience in railway track engineering, including design, construction and maintenance of passenger rail infrastructure.
- Experience on High‑Speed Rail projects will be a plus.
- Solid understanding of track geometry, materials, and performance under dynamic loading.
- Experience working in multidisciplinary engineering environments on large, complex infrastructure projects.
- Familiarity with international rail standards (UIC 700/703/719, EN 16432/13803, AREMA, APTA) and system assurance principles.
- Experience working with delivery partners, contractors, or public‑private partnership (P3) project structures.
- Bilingualism (French and English) is considered as an asset.
